When are swim practices?

Practices start the week following the opening of the pool. Practices are held in the afternoon until later in June and then they move to mornings.

What is the Starter team?

Starter team, also known as speedy six swimmers, is for children who are between the ages of 5 and 8 who can successfully swim the length of the diving well but are not quite ready for 8&Under?  Starter swim team practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  During the first year of swim-team, starters usually only attend home swim meets at Arbor Heights.  If you are a starter and would like to travel to the away meets, just let the coaches know.

What do I do if I cannot attend a swim meet?

We start by assuming that all of the swimmers will be attending all of the meets.  If you are not able to make it to a meet (or a practice the day of a meet), you must sign-out on the sign-out sheets located at the pool on the swim team bulletin board.  This is very important as it takes the coaches a great amount of time to create the meet line-up and they are usually prepared well in advance of the meets.  Swimmers that do not show up for either a swim meet or the practice the day of a meet and did not sign out, making the coach aware of the absence, will not be allowed to swim at the next meet.  Note to parents: If your child becomes sick on the day of the meet, please contact the coach as soon as possible!

What should I wear to a swim meet?

Swimmers should wear the AH suit as well as an AH cap.  It is really important to have an extra set of goggles and cap at the meet.  Evenings can get very cool, especially when you are wet.  Please pack plenty of towels and sweats.

Where can I buy a swimsuit, goggles, caps, sweats, or any other swim gear?

We try to get a two-year suit (one that will last for two years) so there should be a new style every other year. There is a team suit fitting before the start of practices usually around one of the clean up days pre-season. Additionally, swimming gear may be available for sale by vendors at some swim meets.  All swimmers need to be wearing an AH cap and suit during meets.

What should I eat at the swim meet?

There are many healthy and non-healthy items at swim meets.  Keep the treats as a reward for the end.  Most swim meets provide dinner items such as pizza, hamburgers, burritos, noodles, etc.  It is important to bring healthy snacks such as fruit, crackers, energy bars, bagels, and vegetables to snack on during the meet.

When do I have to be at the swim meets and how do I get there?

Warm-ups usually start at 5:00.  It is highly suggested that swimmers arrive at least fifteen minutes earlier to make sure they are in time for the full warm-up.  The dual meets start at 6:00pm and usually last 3 – 3 ½ hours.  Links and directions to other pools.

What are the words to the cheer?

The traditional Arbor Heights cheer is performed before every swim meet!  Arbor Heights Cheer of Champions

Why does it say DQ instead of listing my time?

A DQ stands for disqualification.  Disqualifications are determined by the starter or by the stroke and turn judges.  DQ's may occur for illegal starts, strokes, turns or finishes (e.g. breast and fly must finish with a two-hand touch).  This Individual Stroke Technique Document will answer many of your questions. Please see the swim coach for further details.

How can I sign up for more stroke technique or private lessons?

Stroke technique is offered through the club in the lesson sessions.  Please see the Lessons Page for information.  If you would like to set up private lessons have a parent contact one of the coaches and arrange it separately with them.

What are Prelims, Southern Division and All City?  How do I qualify for those?

Once the dual meet season is over, there are two possible avenues for completion of the season for each swimmer. Those who meet at least one prelims time standard for their age group in an individual event will attend the prelims meet. Those who do not meet the standard will finish their season at the B-champs meet.  Swimmers who qualify for multiple events may swim up to four events at prelims* (choice of  three individual events and one relay or two individual and two relays).  The six fastest swimmers at prelims in each event move on to Southern Division. After the Southern Division meet is swum, times from the Northern Division and the Southern Division are compared, and the six fastest swimmers from among the two divisions will go to the  All City meet.  Thus time, and not placement, is what matters at Southern Division.

*If a swimmer is not able to compete at Southern Division or All City because of prior commitments they are not allowed to swim at Prelims.

What are Relays?

Relays are a combination of four swimmers.  The freestyle relay consists of four individual legs and the medley relay consists of four individual strokes.  The coaches will determine who swims on the relays.  In most cases, the “A” relay will consist of the four fastest individual times and the “B” relay the next four fastest.  Prelim relays will always be determined based on the fastest individual times.
