This is a residential area-there are children at play!

Swim Team Individual Stroke Technique

Butterfly:  Children must have their feet together in every kick and their arms have to go over simultaneously.  They have to touch with two hands during the turn and on the finish. After the start and during a turn, one or more leg kicks are permitted but only one arm pull underwater.  Both arms must be brought forward over the water in the same horizontal plane and pulled back simultaneously under the water.  The kick requires both legs and feet move up and down simultaneously in the vertical plane.  The touch must be made with both hands simultaneously at the turn and finish.

Backstroke:  During backstroke, swimmers must stay on their backs the whole time.  Swimmers may rotate past vertical toward the breast at the turn.  They are allowed one single-arm or simultaneous double-arm pull.  After the initiation of this turning action, no additional arm pulls may be started; however, kicking and gliding actions are permitted.  The swimmer must be on the back before the feet leave the wall.

Breaststroke:  Swimmers are allowed one under-water pull after the start and turn.  During the underwater pull, swimmers are allowed one complete arm pull past their hips and one kick. When arms come up to recover, the swimmer’s body should be up to the surface.  During the stroke, hands may never pass the hips.  The head comes up at the beginning of every stroke.  You are allowed one kick per stroke that requires both legs to kick at the same time.  The feet should be drawn up with the knees bent and the feet must be turned outward during the propulsive part of the kick movement.  All vertical and lateral movements of the legs should be simultaneous and in the same horizontal plane. Swimmers must also touch with two hands simultaneously.

Freestyle:  Swimmers must touch the wall on a flip turn or finish.

Individual Medley:  Swimmers must follow the following rules for each stroke.  During the IM’s turns, swimmers must follow the rules for a fly and breast turn during the fly-back and breast-free exchange.  On backstroke, swimmers are allowed to do a backstroke flip-turn into breaststroke. The order of strokes for an IM are butterfly/backstroke/breaststroke/freestyle.

Relays:  Swimmers must wait until the previous swimmer touches.  For swimmers who are 8 and Under as well as the 10 U Medley relay, swimmers will start in the water from the shallow end.

Starts:  If a swimmer false starts, swimmers have one more chance to start at the right time.
