Welcome from the coach:

Dear Parents,

Welcome to another season of tennis at Arbor Heights!  I am very happy to introduce our new tennis coach, Larkin Philbin, to you. Larkin is a very energetic young woman who is organized and excited to teach our kids the joys of tennis and will bring structure to our program in a very nurturing way.

In addition to being the Head JV Coach for O’Dea High School and Holy Names Academy, Larkin is a high school Spanish teacher and has taught several different grades in obtaining her teaching credentials so I believe she is very well suited to handle the needs of our large group of kids!

Larkin is a graduate of Holy Names Academy and Santa Clara University. In addition to being an honor student, she lettered all 4 years in tennis at Holy Names. Her parents are accomplished players in their own right so her exposure to tennis goes back to her youth. In addition to having participated in lessons as a youth, team play and high school play, Larkin is currently planning on retraining to obtain her national ranking for USTA certification!

Practice will begin on Tuesday, May 20th and will be held twice per week through our spring session (Tues/Thurs). Larkin will be coming up with a format for the spring practice session to accommodate our large team and for the summer will split the U10 group from the U8 group. This should relieve some of the pressure on the courts by reducing the number of players per practice session. We will update the calendar shortly with the new schedule.

In addition to the practice change, she is also willing to organize a “ladder” system so that our players can be ranked to better determine match availability when the meets begin. Another idea being considered is an inner-squad practice match similar to our Red/Blue swim meet to work out all the kinks prior to our first match. The goal is to have a smoother season with less ambiguity. This will result in players and parents knowing in advance what their match play will be. We hope to provide a much more organized experience yet maintain all the fun and enthusiasm your children have experienced in the past.

Finally, I would like to mention I still am searching for the liaison position so if anybody is interested in volunteering to help organize the parties and provide the key communication link between the coach and the parents, I would love to hear from you!

Looking forward to a wonderful season!
