AHSTC NEWS 6/29/26

Dear Members,

With a few chilly days ahead, please remember to send your athletes to practice with a warm layer so they can stay comfortable during workouts.

On Wednesday, July 1, the Dive Team is scheduled to compete at Gregory Seahurst. Unfortunately, their diving board is currently out of service. If it is not repaired in time, the meet may be relocated to the Arb. Should the meet be moved, we will send a text message to the membership on Wednesday with the updated information. We appreciate your flexibility and support as we work to accommodate our many team sports throughout the season. Thank you!

If you don’t have plans for the Fourth of July or America’s 250th celebration, join us for a Late Night Swim! We’ll be keeping the pool open until 10:30 p.m. on July 4 so you can enjoy an evening swim and take in the neighborhood fireworks with family and friends.

We hope to see you there for a fun and festive night at the Arb!

July 4th

Open Swim until 10:30pm!

Adults of the Arb! Join us for a 21+ night at the club on July 11th!

Swim Team Summer Week #2

Hi Otter fans,

Great first meet! It was great to see the kids out there racing and supporting each other. Normally we’d announce the meet score and result, but this one wasn’t close; we won 700-358. Meet results can be found on the league website here, and participating swimmers can find their ribbons in the cabana, the ribbon box is on the table by the trophies.

This week we have one meet on Tuesday (away @OV). Please ASAP RSVP and let us know if your swimmer is participating. So far we have 67 swimmers opting IN, 41 opting OUT, and 97 with no response yet.  (Can’t remember if you responded? Check the RSVP’s List)

Want more info? Read on…

How to RSVP for Swim Meets:  Go to this page: RSVP log into your MemberSplash account and for each swimmer, opt in or out for the meet. Check the RSVP’s List to make sure your RSVP was recorded correctly, it can be a little buggy. Pro tip: If you know your summer schedule, RSVP for all the meets at once. Made a mistake or need to change your response? No problem- just fill out the form again. You can RSVP as many times as you want- we’ll use the one with the latest timestamp. If your plans change and the form is closed, email [email protected] and me. We always appreciate you letting us know- but we might not respond, meet days are busy and email volumes are overwhelming.

Tues Jun 30  is our first away meet, at Olympic View! RSVP is due tonight but I’ll keep the form open until noon tomorrow. Here’s some information from Olympic View about the meet. Heed the advice regarding parking and bug spray and plan to arrive no later than 5 pm.  If you have ADA or other special needs, let me know and I’ll work with OV to accomodate you as best we can.

We’ll have plenty of food and look forward to feeding you all – please come hungry. Hamburgers/Hotdogs/Pizza/Frito Banditos are all on the menu. Cash and electronic payments are accepted.
We are planning for a Red, White, and Blue + FIFA World Cup meet theme and welcome your team to participate in the fun.

There is plenty of parking at Marvista Elementary across the street. We encourage you to plan for that lot rather than trying to snag the limited street parking. The entrance to the Marvista lot can be tricky to find but GPS apps will take you right there. The paved parking lot and a portion of the gravel spots adjacent to our facility are restricted to coaches/VIP and ADA use. The City of Normandy Park is very concerned about large swim events stressing neighbors this summer and we are expecting extra ticketing patrols, so again, we highly recommend using Marvista.

Our gates open at 4:00 – OV will warm up at 4:45 and Arbor Heights will warm up at 5:15. The meet will start promptly at 6pm.  Visiting teams are welcome on the east side of the pool in our lawn area. We think it’s pretty spacious and welcome you to spread out and enjoy the evening. We are reserving our facility bathrooms for ATHLETES and ADA use only. We have fresh portable stalls delivered for general crowd use out in our parking lot. Our plumbing is sensitive and we value safety and privacy for our collective swimmers. Lastly, we have been known to see a mosquito or two at dusk, bug deterrent methods are not a bad idea to have in your meet gear on Tuesday night.

Fri  Jul 3   Fun Fourth Practice!

After this holiday week, things are going to ramp up, we have two home meets. Everyone, especially returning families, we really need your help at home meets this year. We are hosting the All-City Championships and need everyone focused on dialing in our concessions operations. John Stivers has a great plan, and the revenue from concessions will help our club defray the costs of hosting this big meet, which will require rentals and other logistical expenses. But we need hands and expertise to pull this off– please help us!

Tues Jul 7  Home meet vs. Normandy Park. The theme will be OTTER CHAOS!! This is apt because Normandy Park has a huge swim team and the swim meet will be very busy. Please  RSVP  by midnight Sunday.  Sign up to volunteer. Gates open at 4:00, warm up is at 4:45p, big team cheer at 5:30, meet starts at 6 pm.

Thurs Jul 9  ANOTHER home meet vs. Kent. Theme will be Minions.  RSVP and sign up to volunteer,    by midnight Tuesday.  Gates open at 4:00, warm up is at 4:45p, big team cheer at 5:30, meet starts at 6 pm.

Sat Jul 11 is another morning swim clinic. For beginners/intermediate, 8-9 am, and intermediate/advanced, 9-10 am. No RSVP, just show up.

Hope everyone has a fun and safe Fourth!

Swim Team Preseason Email #5

Hello swim team families,

Fantastic Red vs. Blue meet this past weekend. Thank you to everyone who showed up, everyone who volunteered, with a special thank you to John Stivers and the kitchen crew for breakfast, and to Brian Richmond and Jason Little, our courageous pinch-hitting computer team. We started the season with a brand new laptop and newly-updated software, and something about the setup caused the printing process to fail– the printer just spewed out pages of gibberish. We got a late start but thankfully, the sun was shining, the food was good, and we still finished by 11 am! Red and Blue is mostly about learning (for everyone) but for those curious about times, here are the meet results: Red & Blue 2026

tldr people here’s your to-do:  RSVP for Friday party   + bonus points if you knock out your meet opt in/outs for the season: meet rsvp

This party is where all our youth teams come together to celebrate the beginning of the summer season! The whole family is invited, arrive at 5ish and dinner will be served around 6:00. We will be serving chicken wings, burgers and dogs, with potluck side dishes. I hear there will also be a special “Hot Ones” activity featuring some of your favorite coaches. As is our tradition, swimmers will have the opportunity to sign their names on the iconic AH Rock. There will be a special meeting for Seniors & 14&U’s, please meet on the pool deck at 5:30.  There is no practice on Friday June 19, due to the holiday. (And members, a special open swim starts at  noon that day due to the holiday and the world cup watch party, in case you want to go all-in on a day at the club.) Starter Swim families: you are also invited to participate in these activities! Summer Kickoff Party includes staying for open swim from 5:00 until the pool closes at 8:45. Please RSVP so we can add you to our guest list.

Looking ahead to next week, we move into full summer mode:

It takes many hands to run a swim meet, and we need your help! Gates open at 4:00, warm up is at 4:45, the big team cheer is at 5:30, and the meet starts at 6:00 pm. Your swimmer will also get to meet (or be reunited with) their Otter Family and the theme will be: Hoedown Throwdown! AH Dive Summer Week #1

Good morning Dive Team Families,
Summer is officially here and morning practices start today! View the schedule here. I hope everyone had a great time at the Teams Kickoff Party on Friday night. Looking forward to this coming week, we have three events to prepare for.
First off, our Mandatory Dive Parent & Coach Meeting is on Tuesday night at 7pm. I’m hoping to run through our slides in 30 minutes (or less!) and will have time for Q&A at the end.
Picture Day is Friday morning. Dive team pictures will start around 9am. We’ll do the team photo first, followed by individual/sibling photos. We still need 1-2 volunteers to assist the photographer during dive pictures. Volunteer here. Order pictures here (check your email for the password).
We will be wrapping up the week on Saturday June 27 with our First Annual Otter RipFest Mock Meet! The meet will start at 9:00am and is expected to end around 10:30am. Please note the updated ending time – I’m hoping we can move things along smoothly and get you off to your other weekend activities.
Here is the expected timeline:
Arrivals: 8:45am-9:00am
Warm-ups: 9:00am-9:20am
Event set up: 9:20am-9:30am
Event and Judging Clinic: 9:30am-10:30am

We are strongly encouraging all divers to compete in a minimum of one dual meet this summer. As a friendly reminder, this is required for divers to qualify for the All City Championship meet. If you have a new or nervous diver this year, the mock meet will give them the opportunity to see how meets run without the stress of competition. However, this meet is an important event for the whole team as it will provide both divers and parents the opportunity to practice how a dive meet runs before we officially start competition season. Remember that all families are expected to volunteer a minimum of one shift during dual meets and All City.
I am still looking for an announcer and volunteers to train on the new computer system. Please sign up to train on these roles at Otter RipFest so we can be prepared for our dual meets! Reach out to me if you have any questions.
Next month
July 13 2:00-4:00pm Team Jump at SkyZone!
We will be holding a team bonding event with our coaches at SkyZone in Tukwila (thanks for the great idea, Coach Declan)! Purchase tickets and skysocks here. Make sure to select the 2:00pm slot on July 13!
Please note skysocks are required, and each participant will need to sign a SkyZone waiver before participating.

Dear Members,

What a fantastic weekend at the Arb! Thank you to everyone who joined us for the All Teams Kickoff and Bingo & Movie Night. We hope you had a wonderful time connecting with friends and kicking off the summer season.

Happy Belated Father’s Day to all our Arb dads! We are so grateful for everything you do, especially those of you who step up to help with grilling and making our club events a success.

‘Tis the season for meets, matches, and special events! Please be sure to check the club calendar before heading to the pool, as the end of June and early July bring swim meets and tennis matches that may result in facility and court closures.

The good news? Beginning today, June 22, weekday Open Swim will start at 1:30PM.

REMINDERS

Monday-Friday the facility will be cleared from 1-1:30 while the lifeguards clean up after lessons.

As the summer heats up, please help the lifeguards and staff by following all AHSTC pool rules and guidelines. These can be found on our website here!

Please do not park beside or in-front of the dumpsters. If they’re blocked Waste Management will not picked up and the pool is charged a fee for emergency pick up!

Dear Members,

Now that the season is underway, I would like to introduce you to some of the faces you see the most at the pool; our Office Ladies!

Julia — not pictured as she’s currently off on an adventure in Italy! She has been an employee at the arb for 10+ years. Previously a life guard before her move to the office! We will update the picture when she gets home.

Elena — previously one of our lifeguards, Elena has decided to follow in her mother’s footsteps and join the office team. Many members may remember her mom, Kathleen, who served as an office lady for many years!

Ashlee — our newest addition to the office staff. Welcome, Ashlee!

Sara — This is Sara’s second year in the office and we are so happy she is part of the team.

Karla — our longest-serving Arb employee, with more than 20 years of dedicated service in the office. Karla was a member and watched her daughters grow up swimming at the pool. Now her oldest daughter and first granddaughter are members at the arb and her youngest is an Arb employee, too! Thank you, Karla. We are so lucky to have you on the team.

Next time you’re at the pool, please take a moment to thank the office ladies and have a little chat with them.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Jun 13   Red & Blue Practice Meet*

Red vs. Blue is a Saturday morning practice swim meet. Arrive with your swimmer by 8 am and plan to stay at the pool until around 11. This event is like a scrimmage swim meet: we randomly assign swimmers to either the red or blue team, and each participant will have the chance to race in up to four individual events in each stroke (free, back, breast, fly)  This is an important event for practicing how a swim meet runs, both for the swimmers and for parent volunteers. All families, but especially returning ones, are expected to sign up for a volunteer job. There will be Q&A opportunities for new families and training for volunteer roles. If you have a teen in the house who needs service hours, they can volunteer to help out with Red & Blue, sign them up! There will also be food and fun, and a table for swapping old/outgrown gear- bring your hand-me-downs!

Jun 19   Summer Kickoff Party*  (and NO PRACTICE)

This party is where all our youth teams come together to celebrate the beginning of the summer season. The whole family is invited, arrive at 5:00 and dinner will be served around 6:00. We will be serving chicken wings, burgers and dogs, with potluck side dishes. I hear there will also be a special “hot ones” activity featuring some of your favorite coaches. Also- as is our tradition, swimmers will have the opportunity to sign their name on the iconic AH Rock. There will be a special meeting for Seniors & 14&U’s, please meet on the pool deck at 5:30.  There is no practice on Friday June 19, due to the holiday

June 22 First Day of Summer Schedule

This is when the fun really starts: review the Practice schedule.

Jun 26   Team Picture Day & Pancake Breakfast*

Arrive at 8:00 am, we will do individual/sibling photos then the big group photo at 8:30. After the group photo, the team will enjoy a pancake breakfast. If your swimmer is not participating on the dive or tennis teams, they will probably be ready to leave around 9:30-10.  No practice, just photos and pancakes.  If you participate in other teams, Dive is at 9:00 and Tennis 10:00. We need helpers for breakfast, plus a couple of people to assist the photographer.

<Photo order form coming soon> | Volunteer for Team Picture Day/Pancake Breakfast

* Starter Swim families: you are also invited to participate in all of these activities. Summer Kickoff Party includes staying for open swim from 5:00 until the pool closes at 8:45. Please RSVP so we can add you to our guest list.

VOLUNTEER ROLES

Are you still reading? Amazing- thank you! Here’s a little more about volunteering with swim team. We depend on you to lend your time and talents to make everything happen. Volunteer opportunities are listed in this sign up genius (it has multiple tabs): Volunteer

There are three main volunteer roles at swim meets:

Concessions: We have a great concessions stand, and need helpers for setup, sales, operating the cash register, working the grills/kitchen, and clean up. Concessions is friendly, fun, and social. It is lively but also easy to step away for a minute to help your kids or watch them race. If you’re a skilled leader capable of coordinating teams, John Stivers is recruiting for a lead for concession operations for swim meets. This is an important role and if you enjoy a fast paced environment and good food, we’d love to have you step up!

Stroke and Turn Judge: If you are a former competitive swimmer, or you are decisive and have good attention to detail, you’d make a great stroke & turn official. It helps to have technical knowledge of swimming– like what a breaststroke kick or legal flip turn looks like, but don’t be intimidated; we can train you! We are fortunate to have Michael Dyson leading our officiating team this year- I can connect you with him if you have questions.

Timers: If you can operate a stop watch, you can be a timer! This role does require some focus and also entails a little bit of herding kids behind the blocks. Every lane needs 3 timers so you’ll be part of a small team running one lane. If you’re newer to timing or prefer a more chill environment, the outer lanes are less intense.

Responsible teenagers over the age of 14 can also time or help with concessions at dual meets.

Other roles for swim meets include announcer, starter, runner, and computer operator, it’s a whole production. If you’re interested in training for any of these roles, Red & Blue is a great opportunity to try this.

Outside of swim meets, there are also opportunities to volunteer for events or projects. Can you help with picture day? Pancake breakfast? Coordinate a craft project? Help throw parties? There are many ways to get involved, we have roles listed on this tab: Other volunteer opportunities

Thank you in advance for lending your time, we definitely need your help!  Plus, by stepping back and doing your own thing, don’t forget that this helps give your swimmers room to build independence and confidence– and they get to see you model what it looks like to engage and build community. Here’s the sign up again: Volunteer

That’s it for now, please feel free to reach out with any questions.

BTW, if you registered late, or want to see past emails, you can find these and key links on our Swim Team Family Page And if you haven’t already, there’s still time to  Order Team Suits  and  Apparel.

Let’s go Arbor!
